It’s been over a hundred years since the Los Gatos to Santa Cruz rail line opened and more than 60 since it closed, but the old Southern Pacific right-of-way is still there, including five tunnels, 3 of them over a mile long. We hiked the old Southern Pacific railroad right-of-way and learned the history of this local railroad.
Join us as we journey backwards in time along the old railroad route through the Santa Cruz mountains. We’ll hike as much of the 24-mile railway line as we can in two days. We’ll start at the railroad depot in Felton, check out some steam engines, get a tour of the Big Trees Railroad train barn, and then hike the old right-of-way to two fantastic train tunnels outside of town. We’ll spend the night camping under the stars and sharing stories and good times.
I co-taught this weekend-long class three times, in 2006, 2008 and 2011. A dozen people came to each campout, learned history, and shared what they knew.
