By a sheer stroke of Ebay luck, I found the LED display find of the decade.
There is a super spendy industrial numeric display that I coveted early on in this project. Four inch high letters, super bright LEDs, built like a tank, RS232 serial communications, but unfortunately in the $4- to $500 range. I called the company and asked if they’d be willing to donate a few. No dice. I think their exact words were, “I can’t help you -CLICK-.”
I flirted tentatively with sketchy Chinese LED manufacturers who assured me that for a mere $70 a pop, they could get LED displays here yesterday. I kinda doubted their timeline, and had some apprehensions as well, based on online reports, about whether I’d ever really receive anything at all.
However, as luck would have it, a seller on Ebay was offering a $400 industrial display for $50. Checking with him further, it turned out he has a large lot of them. Most of them unused and unopened in their original packaging.
I bought a half dozen.
They arrived over the weekend.
They are so industrial-styled that they don’t have connector, only screw terminals to directly connect power, serial, etc. Hawt.
